水熊虫并不是一个物种，而是由1000多个物种组成的缓步动物门的统称。
这些8只爪、长得有点像米其林的家伙看似简单，耐受极端环境的能力却令人惊叹。
它能在-20℃沉睡30年后成功苏醒，能在150℃高温下继续存活，甚至还能在没有食物没有水的月球表面生存下来。
水熊虫们的栖息地相当广泛，海洋、淡水甚至沼泽中都有它们的身影。
水熊虫必须要在水环境中才能生长和繁殖，而遇到干涸时，它们会让自己脱水收缩，进入一种“隐生”状态。
这种状态下，水熊虫可以耐受各种极端的物理环境。
