Vocabulary — radicals, characters & words
A self-contained, static study tool for Chinese, built from openly licensed data (CC-CEDICT, Tatoeba, hanzi-writer, the Tuttle character order). Drill down Radical → Character → Word, or study the 800 Tuttle characters in book order. Everything runs in your browser — no server, no tracking.
🔍 Radicals
All 214 Kangxi radicals, filterable by stroke count or search. Pick a radical to see its common characters, then a character to drill into the words and example sentences built from it.
Open radicals →🔎 Search
One box across radicals, characters and the full word dictionary. Match by glyph, pinyin or meaning, and expand any hit to see its related words, characters and example sentences.
Open search →📖 Tuttle 800
The 800 most basic characters in the order the Tuttle book introduces them, with component breakdowns and parts of speech. Flip on self-check to quiz yourself card by card.
Open Tuttle →🃏 Flashcards
A shuffled deck of radicals and their example characters. Flip to reveal pinyin, meaning and related words. Space / Enter / arrow keys do everything.
Open flashcards →✏️ Practice
A multiple-choice drill: “What does this character mean?”. Four options, keyboard shortcuts, optional auto-proceed, and a running score with mistakes review.
Open practice →The data
All data is extracted from the open-licensed datasets
used by the original app (CC-CEDICT, Tatoeba Chinese, hanzi-writer stroke data and the Tuttle chapter order), into
plain JSON under data/ so a simple static server can host this folder. View them or rebuild with
build/build-vocabulary.py.
